Yes, Matt, the use of violence in punishing children was quite commonplace in the 1920s, in many cases stemming from the Biblical admonition that if parents "spare the rod," (don't beat their children), they will "spoil the child."

A lot has changed since then. Violence is no longed seen as the preferred method of punishment. Except, of course, on a national level.
